Dr. Acosta earned 2 bachelor’s degree (in Educational Psychology and Clinical Psychology) from Dominican Adventist University. He graduated from a master’s Program in Family and Couple Therapy at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. He received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Social and Human Sciences at University of Almeria. The research focus and expertise of his PhD addresses trauma due to childhood sexual abuse and self-esteem. He graduated with the highest honors in both undergraduate and graduate studies. He is currently being supervised for licensure as a psychologist.
Dr. Acosta is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 22 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Dr. Acosta has worked in the mental health field combining different roles and perspectives as a therapist, clinical supervisor, professor, and research advisor. His areas of expertise include Special Education, Learning Disabilities, Trauma, Self-Esteem, Psychopathology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Family and Couple Systemic Therapy.
In his practice, Dr. Acosta uses different approaches with the purpose of promoting a therapeutic experience focused on favoring the awareness of the people he serves about their own needs and potentials. For Dr. Acosta, the therapeutic process is above all a learning and guided self-discovery experience that should lead us to learn and use the skills we need to assume a proactive and solution-focused approach in the process of managing our unique challenges and circumstances.
